Viscose: Properties of Man-Made Fiber from Natural Cellulose

Viscose occupies a fascinating middle ground among textile fibers: it is engineered in a factory yet begins life as natural cellulose extracted from wood pulp or cotton linters. For this reason it is classed as a regenerated fiber rather than a fully synthetic one, giving it the soft, breathable hand of a natural material with the consistency that industrial processing allows.

Chemically, the cellulose is dissolved and re-spun through the viscose process, producing a smooth, lustrous filament. The resulting cloth is prized for its excellent drape, cool touch against the skin, and moisture absorption that typically exceeds what polyester offers, making it a comfortable choice for warm climates.

Core Properties

Viscose pairs a refined appearance with practical performance, but its behavior demands careful understanding at both the sourcing and manufacturing stages:

• Drape and sheen: gives garments a fluid, elegant fall well suited to dresses, blouses, and linings.
• Moisture absorption: breathable and thermally comfortable in hot weather.
• Dyeability: takes dye deeply, yielding vivid, relatively fast colors.
• Wet weakness: fiber strength drops noticeably when wet, raising the risk of stretching or tearing.
• Creasing and shrinkage: wrinkles easily and may shrink if not finished or laundered with care.

Manufacturing and Care Considerations

On the production line, viscose requires careful control of thread tension during sewing to avoid puckering, and a pre-cut shrinkage test on a sample is strongly advised before bulk cutting. It is frequently blended with polyester or elastane to improve dimensional stability and crease resistance, while dry cleaning or a gentle cold wash remains the safest option for pure viscose fabrics.
