Polyester Fabric Explained: Properties, Pros and Uses

Polyester is a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum-based products. It is the most widely used fabric in the world, applied on its own or blended with cotton, viscose and elastane. If a label reads "100% polyester" or "PES", this is the fiber in question.

Key Properties

Polyester is strong, wrinkle-resistant, fast-drying and holds its shape and color well. It resists stretching, shrinkage and most chemicals, which is why it is used wherever durability and easy care matter.

  • Strength: high resistance to tearing and abrasion.
  • Care: barely wrinkles, dries fast, does not shrink.
  • Color: retains bright dyes after many washes.
  • Cons: less breathable than cotton, can build static.

Where It Is Used

Sportswear and workwear, linings, jackets, home textiles, curtains, furniture upholstery, backpacks and technical fabrics. Blended with cotton it combines comfort with durability.

Tip: for garments worn against the skin, choose a cotton blend so the fabric breathes better while keeping polyester's advantages.
