How to Calculate Fabric Consumption for Bulk Apparel Production

Fabric consumption calculation is the single most decisive step in pricing any bulk apparel order. A small error in the per-garment estimate multiplies across thousands of units and can quietly turn a profitable order into a loss. This guide gives you a practical method to estimate the quantity you need accurately before you commit to any supply contract.

The factors that drive consumption

Accurate calculation starts with understanding the key variables. The most important is fabric width (commonly 90 to 150 cm): the wider the goods, the less length you need. Next come the pattern repeat for printed cloth and the nap direction in velvets and pile fabrics, which forces one-directional cutting and raises waste.

  • Fabric width: determines how many pieces nest in each row of the marker.
  • Size ratio: the split between small and large sizes shifts the average consumption.
  • Waste and offcuts: allow roughly 3% to 10% depending on cutting complexity.
  • Shrinkage: cotton and woven goods may shrink after the first wash.

The practical calculation method

The most reliable approach is to build an actual marker containing all required size pieces, measure the fabric length it consumes, and divide by the number of garments to get consumption per garment. Multiply that figure by the total quantity and add your waste allowance. When no marker is available, cut one sample garment and measure its consumption as an approximate reference before full production.

Always express consumption in a clear unit: running meters when buying woven fabric by length, or kilograms when dealing with knit fabrics sold by weight. Mixing the two units is a common cause of sourcing errors.

Tip: Always order 5% to 7% above your theoretical figure to cover weaving defects, recutting, and dye-lot variation between fabric rolls.

From calculation to sourcing

Once the consumption figure is fixed, turn it into a clear purchase order specifying width, weight, nap direction, and your buffer percentage. Document your assumptions so you can revisit them if the design or size ratio changes. This discipline is what separates a factory that controls its cost from one that discovers a shortfall too late. Through the Tkanex platform you can match your calculated requirement with suppliers who list width, weight, and available stock clearly, so you order the right quantity the first time and cut waste and delays.
